Dr. Clark Makes History as Utah’s First CMCA-Certified Physician

|

Dr. Thomas Clark has officially become the first and only physician in Utah certified by the Cardiometabolic Center Alliance (CMCA). This recognition places Dr. Clark in elite company—his clinic in Logan is now one of only 20 CMCA-certified centers in the world, and only the second in the western U.S.

“It is amazing to be a part of this, to be 20th in the world in Logan, Utah, and the 2nd in the Western part of the country is amazing,” Dr. Clark said.

What is the Cardiometabolic Center Alliance?

The Cardiometabolic Center Alliance (CMCA) is a global network of healthcare providers committed to improving outcomes for patients with diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, obesity, and kidney disease—chronic conditions that often overlap and require thoughtful, coordinated care.

“The Cardiometabolic Alliance is a group of clinics throughout the world—only 20 in total—that focuses on diabetes and cardiometabolic health. It started at St. Luke’s, where patients could get all their care needs met in one place,” Dr. Clark explained.

Most CMCA clinics are located on the East Coast, Brazil, and France. Dr. Clark’s Logan-based clinic is the only one in Utah and one of the only clinics west of the Mississippi, alongside a sister site in Arizona.

What Makes the CMCA Approach Different?

The CMCA stands out because of its comprehensive, team-based approach. It brings together specialists, pharmacists, care guides, and primary care providers in a collaborative model to reduce risk and improve long-term outcomes.

“Here in the clinic, patients will get their diabetes care, kidney care, blood pressure care, obesity care, insulin care, and heart failure care—all in one place. They’ll meet with a pharmacist, have access to a care guide, and stay connected with their primary care team. If they need a specialist, we’re well-connected to get them where they need to go,” said Dr. Clark.

And it’s not just convenient—it’s proven effective.

“Only 20% of patients around the nation are being treated with these miraculous treatments in traditional settings. In the Cardiometabolic Alliance, more than 60% of patients are on these same treatments,” Dr. Clark noted.

The Power of Shared Knowledge

A major strength of the CMCA is the way it connects clinics around the globe to share data, evolve best practices, and improve patient outcomes through real-world research and feedback.

“That partnership is so vital. If you’re not a partner in the program, you can’t get access to the materials or the evolving protocols. The Alliance is constantly improving, and that feedback loop is what makes it so powerful,” Dr. Clark said.

Who Should Visit a CMCA Clinic?

The Alliance focuses specifically on patients dealing with:

  • Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease

  • Diabetes and Kidney Disease

  • Diabetes and Heart Failure

These combinations have the highest risk of complications, but research has shown that specific medications and care models can significantly reduce heart attacks and even death in these patients.

“We would love to see everyone who has one of these conditions. We don’t have to be their primary care—we just want to get them on guideline-directed therapy, then send them back to their provider and check in once a year,” Dr. Clark explained.
“The Alliance has a great quote: ‘We will do the heavy lifting to get them on guideline-directed therapy, and then we will continue to be a resource for them to make sure they stay on that care.’”

How It Started and Where It’s Headed

Dr. Clark first learned about the CMCA five years ago while working on a team-based model with a pharmaceutical educator.

“I was doing a non-siloed approach to care when someone suggested I reach out to the Alliance. ‘You should join these people—it’s an incredible alliance,’ they said. And they were right.”

Now that Logan’s clinic is certified, Dr. Clark has plans to expand.

“This is just the beginning. We have several providers at Ogden Clinic who are interested in implementing this model. There are thousands of patients out there with these conditions who aren’t getting the care we know they should. Our goal is to continue expanding so that everyone, regardless of insurance or circumstances, can get the best care available.”

A Healthier Future for Utah

Dr. Clark’s certification is more than just a milestone—it’s a turning point for Utah healthcare. It brings top-tier, coordinated care closer to home and sets the stage for broader change across the state and the region.
